The First Family and Jesus

First off this post will make you smile.

Then a question for you all:

Since Alan Keyes says that the Illinois Senate race is a "battle for God" or something like that..I've been wondering about a faith related political issue. It may not even be an issue but i've been wondering about it.

Our friend Dubya is on the record about his feelings about Jesus. I think I feel the same way about him, but with really different responses. However, is there anything on the record how the rest of the First Family (Laura and the twins) feel about him?

My question is this: what is so Christ-like about Bush's singleminded devotion to cutting taxes and rewarding the super-rich? Just believing the things the bible says Jesus did--walk on water, raise people from the dead, turn water to wine, and a few other difficult-to-believe epsiodes--does not make one much of a Christian (at least in my view). I think you actually have to live as if you believe in what Jesus said, which was all about forgiveness, compassion for the poor, and love for all people. I fail to see how Bush can be regarded as "Christian" in any meaningful way.

As for Keyes, yesterday he blasted Obama for turning from the Declaration of Independence and taking, instead, the "slaveholder's position." Aside from the fact that the Declaration was written by a slaveholder--so Keyes looks ignorant--he is really vile. His candidacy should do wonders for the Illinois Republican party.

I completely agree with you.

Alan Keyes is a horrible, horrible man. I saw him debate Alan Dershowitz (sp) on C-SPAN once, and he was owned. Granted, he didn't know he had been owned, but he was regardless.

I suspect he's about to have his ass handed to him in this election, as well.

I remember reading that Laura Bush's favorite work of literature is the Grand Inquisitor sequence from Brothers Karamazov, her reason being that it's about Jesus and she finds it comforting. I'm not sure what to make of that sentiment, but there you go.

And for what it's worth, there was plenty of campus gossip about Barbara, but none of it had anything obvious to do with Jesus.
